Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)
EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques and is also known as Tapping.
EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques and is also known as Tapping. It is a powerful self-help tool designed to alleviate stress, anxiety, and emotional imbalances. By gently tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on a troubling issue, EFT Tapping helps to release blocked energy, restore emotional well-being, and promote overall mental and physical health. Easy to learn and apply, EFT Tapping is a non-invasive and natural method that can transform your life by improving emotional, mental, and physical well-being.
EFT Tapping is a cognitive, somatic, emotional and spiritual approach to healing, combining principles from traditional Chinese acupressure and modern psychology. The process involves tapping on specific points on the body while focusing on an emotional or physical issue. When experiencing negative emotions, such as fear, worry, or unresolved issues, the amygdala in your brain is activated. This prompts the release of stress-related hormones into your bloodstream, initiating the fight-or-flight response. While this reaction is useful in genuine danger, it can be counterproductive in daily life. By tapping on specific acupressure points and acknowledging your negative emotions, you signal to your brain that there is no actual physical threat, allowing it to relax and subsequently decrease cortisol levels.
How Does Tapping Work?
You tap on the body’s energy meridian points with the fingertips following a sequence. The tapping points, in sequence, are as follows:
- Side of the hand – between the wrist and the bottom knuckle on the pinky finger.
- Top of the head — directly in the centre of the top of the head.
- Eyebrow — the beginning of the brow, just above and to the side of the nose.
- Side of the eye — on the bone at the outside corner of the eye.
- Under the eye — on the bone under the eye, approximately 1 inch below the pupil.
- Under the nose — the point between the nose and upper lip.
- Chin point — halfway between the underside of the lower lip and the bottom of the chin.
- Collarbone — the point where the breastbone (sternum), collarbone, and first rib intersect.
- Under the arm — at the side of the body, approximately 4 inches below the armpit.

Is Tapping Safe?
This is a great question!
Yes, EFT tapping is generally considered safe for most people. It involves tapping on specific acupressure points on the body while voicing certain statements, and the physical act of tapping is gentle and non-invasive.
However, here are a few points to keep in mind regarding the safety and applicability of EFT:
1. Emotional Distress: While EFT can help process emotions, it may also bring up intense or unexpected emotions. This can be overwhelming for some individuals, especially if they’re working through trauma or severe emotional distress. It’s never recommended to work through trauma on your own, so please seek support from a qualified professional, who is trauma-informed, before working on those experiences yourself.
2. Not a Replacement: EFT should not be seen as a replacement for traditional medical treatments or psychological therapies. It can be a complementary tool. If someone has a severe or diagnosed condition, they should continue with their prescribed treatments and consult with their healthcare provider about the appropriateness of adding EFT.
3. Physical Sensations: Some individuals might experience light-headedness, dizziness, or other sensations while tapping. This is not common, but if it occurs, it’s important to stop and assess before proceeding.
4. Limitations: EFT doesn’t work for everyone. Its efficacy can vary depending on the individual, the issue at hand, and many other factors.
5. Professional Guidance: If you’re using EFT to address significant traumas, it’s advisable to do so under the guidance of a trained EFT practitioner or another mental health professional familiar with the technique.
6. Children: If using EFT with children, it’s essential to approach with sensitivity and to have proper training or guidance. Always ensure that the practice is age-appropriate and respectful. A great book I recommend is called ‘Gorilla Thumps & Bear Hugs’ by Alex Ortner.
In general, EFT tapping is a gentle and non-invasive technique. Still, as with any therapeutic method, it’s important to approach it with awareness and to know when to seek additional support or professional guidance. If you ever have doubts about its appropriateness for a particular situation or individual, it’s best to consult with a qualified expert.
